Information about Britain
The Britannia bullion coin is a renowned gold and silver investment coin produced by the Royal Mint of the United Kingdom. It features the iconic figure of Britannia, a symbol of strength and national pride. Introduced in 1987 as a gold bullion coin, the Britannia was the UK's response to the growing global bullion market. The silver coin was introduced in 1997.
The front side of the coin traditionally features the reigning British monarch, with Queen Elizabeth II appearing from 1987 until 2022, after which King Charles III replaced her.
The back side is where Britannia comes to life, depicted as a strong and protective figure, often standing with a trident in one hand and a shield bearing the Union Jack in the other. Designed by Philip Nathan, the classic imagery of Britannia has remained largely consistent, though the Royal Mint has occasionally released special editions featuring alternative artistic interpretations. Since 2021, the coin has incorporated advanced security features, including a latent image that shifts between a trident and a padlock, micro-text, and detailed tincture lines on Britannia’s shield, adding both aesthetic appeal and anti-counterfeiting measures.
Britannia bullion coins are minted in gold, silver, and platinum. Originally, the gold coin was 22-karat (91.67% gold), but since 2013, it has been minted in 99.99% pure gold. The silver Britannia was initially .958 fine silver, but since 2013, it has been upgraded to .999 fine silver. The gold coins are available in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz, while the silver coin is available in 1oz size, though other sizes such as 2 oz, 5 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kg have been issued.
