Information about the American eagle

The American Gold Eagle is the official gold coin of the United States, first issued by the U.S. Mint in 1986. This coin is one of the most popular gold coins in the world, valued by investors and collectors.

The obverse features Lady Liberty, designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, holding a torch and an olive branch, with the U.S. Capitol in the background.

The reverse design has changed once, from 1986 to 2021, it depicted a male eagle carrying an olive branch, flying above a nest with a female eagle and hatchlings, designed by Miley Busiek. Since 2021, the reverse features a close-up portrait of a bald eagle, designed by Jennie Norris.

The coin is made of 22-karat gold (91.67% gold, 3% silver, 5.33% copper for durability). It has a nominal face value (e.g., $50 for the 1 oz coin), but its market value is based on its gold content.
