Information about the Krugerrand

First introduced in 1967, the Krugerrand is the world's first gold investment coin weighing one ounce. On the obverse (front side) of the coin is an image of Paul Kruger (Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger), the former president of the Republic of Transvaal, while on the reverse (back side) of the coin there is a springbok antelope, the national animal of South Africa. The front side of the coin was designed by Otto Schulz, while the reverse side was designed by Coert Steynberg.

It is produced by the South African Mint in collaboration with Rand Refinery. Today, the Krugerrand is one of the most liquid gold coins, meaning it can be easily bought and sold worldwide.

The coin is made of 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper and is available in weights of 33.93 grams (one Krugerrand), 16.96 grams (half Krugerrand), 8.48 grams (quarter Krugerrand), and 3.39 grams (tenth Krugerrand). The copper content provides additional durability, as pure gold (24 karats) is softer and more prone to scratches, giving the coin its distinctive reddish hue.
